TENS of thousands of people flocked to the World Expo site yesterday to visit the China Pavilion and other attractions after nine roads at the Pudong section of the site reopened to the public.

The Expo Culture Center, where the opening and closing ceremonies were held, also opened yesterday.

People can see more than 200 Expo pavilions in Pudong from Shibo Avenue, the main route on the Pudong side as well as the Guozhan, Huafeng, Xueye, Zhoujiadu, Hongshan, Yinan, Shiboguan and Shibocun roads.

However, wire fences and concrete walls have been set up around most pavilions to prevent public access where the exhibits are being removed.

Most pavilions have yet to be dismantled because the Expo organizer has asked to slow down demolition work to avoid turning the site into a construction site. Some major pavilions, such as those of Saudi Arabia, France, Spain, Italy and Russia will remain.

The China Pavilion received more than 60,000 visitors over the weekend, almost as many as when it first reopened on December 1. Visitors had to wait for more than 2 hours on average to enter the pavilion yesterday.

Shanghai residents were advised to avoid visiting the site during the three-day holiday break because of the large numbers of visitors from outside the city, Qian Zhiguang, deputy director of the China Pavilion, said.

He said visitors would be able to enter the pavilion without waiting after 2pm on weekdays after the holiday, which ends today.

More than 600 volunteers from local universities started work yesterday to help visitors at the China Pavilion.

The Expo Culture Center on Shibo Avenue is open from 10am to 10pm every day. Many visitors climbed to the sixth floor of the seashell-shaped venue along the Huangpu River to take pictures of the Expo site.

An outer ring-shaped corridor on the floor and a public ice-skating rink underground that were popular among Expo visitors will reopen soon.

Five cinemas, seating 682 people, began screening the latest movies from yesterday.

The National Basketball Association's pre-season games, stage shows and concerts will be played in the 18,000-seat main stage of the center.

PARTICIPANTS at the Shanghai World Expo jointly issued the Shanghai Declaration in Shanghai today as a "summary of the substantive achievements" of the 184-day event, looking to innovations as solutions in tackling the challenges of urban development.

The Shanghai Declaration is also "an expression of the shared aspirations of people around the world for a 'Better City, Better Life'," according to the statement released at the Summit Forum on the sidelines of the expo, which is set to conclude later today.

The participants came to consensus, through exhibitions of pavilions, showcases of urban best practices and exchanges, that people's understanding and pursuit of a better life are both the foundations and the engines of urban development.

It is necessary to re-examine the relationship between people, cities and the planet, said the statement.

They pledged to build cities that forge harmony between diverse people, between development and environment and between cultural legacies and future innovations.

The declaration also proposed that October 31, the closing day of the World Expo 2010, should be nominated as World Better Cities Day, in a bid to recall, renew and advance ideas and practices of the Shanghai Expo for future development.

The Expo opened on May 1 in Shanghai, China's financial hub, for a six-month run with the theme of "Better City, Better Life", with 246 countries and international organizations taking part.

Since the Expo opened on May 1, there have been more than 72 million visitors, a record high in the Expo history.

----

Full text of Shanghai Declaration of World Expo 2010

Following is the full text of the Shanghai Declaration of the World Expo 2010 jointly issued on October 31, 2010 by participant nations, regions and international organizations at the Summit Forum on the sidelines of the Expo, which is set to conclude later today.

World Expo 2010 Shanghai China

Shanghai Declaration

31 October 2010

We, participants and friends from all reaches of the globe, drawn by the theme "Better City, Better Life," have gathered in Shanghai and jointly fashioned the first World Expo in a developing country organized under the auspices of the Bureau International des Expositions. During these 184 days, we have explored, envisioned and simulated the mosaic of urban life through the wonderful exhibitions of the pavilions, the instructive showcases of urban best practices, the in-depth intellectual exchanges in the forums and the brilliant cultural events.

We have come to realize that people's understanding and pursuit of a better life are both the foundations and the engines of urban development.

We are also convinced that it is necessary to re-examine the relationship between people, cities and our planet.

We agree that, in tackling the challenges of urban development, innovation offers solutions and the concept of "Cities of Harmony" embodies our dreams.

At present, with more than half of humankind living in cities, our planet has entered the urban age. Rapid urbanization and industrialization have offered to humanity the abundant fruits of modern civilization, but at the same time they have brought unprecedented challenges. Population explosion, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, resource shortages, urban poverty and cultural conflicts are becoming urban problems with a global scope. For historical and current reasons, these phenomena are especially prominent in many developing countries. The Shanghai Expo responded to the times by selecting cities as its theme. It also introduced the first-ever Urban Best Practices Area and Virtual Expo to pursue a ground-breaking exploration of the possible solutions to the common dilemmas faced by humankind.

Themed "Vitality of Life," the metallic, crescent-shaped boat pavilion covers an area of 6000 square meters and has three floors, with its "hull" supported by pillars such that it hangs 20 meters above ground. The pavilion lies at the heart of the Expo site in the direction of Mecca. Around 150 Saudi date palms will be planted on the roof of the pavilion to create a desert oasis, while traditional performances accompanied by drinks and treats add a magical touch to a whole new world.

The Saudi exhibition is characterized by five themes: water, oil, knowledge, individuality and the future. On the first floor, a prosperous and modern Saudi Arabia is presented; on the second floor, a 360-degree 1,600-square-meter cinema screen, probably the largest 3D IMAX Theater in the world, will take visitors to Saudi's oases, deserts, villages, seas and cities with their modern architecture and traditional bazaars; and on the third floor, the roof garden will be a place of harmony and charm where visitors can relax.

Souvenir shops and restaurants are located at the lobby, and small souvenirs will also be given to departing visitors.

WORLD Expo Shanghai 2010 has shown a remarkable shift in visitors' attitudes as the event enters its fifth month.

At the beginning, corporate pavilions and the Urban Best Practices Area in Puxi were somewhat shunned as people flocked to the national pavilions at Expo's Pudong site.

Now the UBPA and corporate pavilions are attracting about 350,000 total visits each day.

Many of the pavilions, in zones D and E, have seen daily attendance increase several times since the beginning of the fair.

Chen Chao, director of both zones, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the change is the result of a gradual learning process among both visitors and the people managing pavilions along with positive word of mouth.

Chen said the pavilions have improved presentations and added more to exhibits to help people better understand the concepts and keep them interested.

The Hamburg House, also known as the "Passive House," now offers more tours, helping visitors understand the high-tech pavilion and how it keeps the temperature around 25 degrees Celsius without air conditioning. Before the tours were launched, visitors didn't understand what the pavilion was about.

Oliver Hayakawa, director of the Liverpool Pavilion, said visitors now average around 5,000 people each day, a big jump from the 1,000 back in May. To attract visitors and keep them focused, the pavilion cut its film from 8 minutes to 3 minutes and added some interactive games to entertain people.

Chen Xing, 27, from Tianjin, said the interactive sections - including singing songs by the Beatles, playing soccer and answering questions to win gifts - were a lot of fun.

The China State Shipbuilding Corporate Pavilion yesterday became the first on the Puxi side of the Expo site to attract 5 million visitors.

Gong Hanming, the pavilion's vice director, said nearly 40,000 visitors enter every day, up from the 10,000 plus in May. Gong said they have improved service and offered more activities to attract people to the pavilion.

He said they have captains telling stories, which children love, inside the pavilion. He also said they added seats in the queuing area and offer free slippers to women wearing high heels.

In addition, word of mouth has spread, drawing more people to the UBPA and corporate pavilions.

The Oil Pavilion has surpassed the Saudi Arabia Pavilion for the longest wait to enter after visitors gave thumbs up reviews to its 4D movie.

The pavilion's mascot, "Tai," a cute, friendly and cheerful child-giant, will welcome visitors at the entrance. On the roof of the pavilion, a clock of friendship speaks for the 35 years of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand.

The exhibition is divided into "Journey of Harmony, Harmony of Difference Tones and Harmony of Thais." The "Journey of Harmony" will take visitors to the past to explore the lifestyle of Siamese people, who prospered along the river; the "Harmony of Different Tones" spotlights the interaction between urban and rural areas as well as the country's friendly exchanges with other countries; and the "Harmony of Thais" embodies Thais' attitude towards life - pursuing a simple lifestyle of peace and contentment.

A wide variety of Thai food ranging from piquant tastes to milder flavors will be served. These wooden rods not only reflect light, but also rise and fall with changing music rhythms to bring visitors both audio and visual impacts. The rods are musical instruments themselves and when tapped, make pleasant sounds that change in the morning, afternoon and evening. This relaxing atmosphere reflects the pavilion's theme of "Architectural and Cultural Diversity of Our Cities," which aims to introduce visitors to Hungary's natural resources, economy, people, and culture rather than flood them with a surge of products.
One innovation that will be displayed is the Gomboc, created by two Hungarian mathematicians. It is the first known homogenous object with one stable and one unstable equilibrium point, similar in function to the Chinese roly-poly. It is a symbol of the unremitting and creative spirit of the Hungarian nation.
