Urban tourism in Shanghai has stepped into its "golden period" of development, said Dao Shuming, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration.

During the 12th five-year from 2011 to 2015, Shanghai will invest over 100 billion yuan to build 20 municipal key tourism projects and over 100 district key tourism projects. At present, 6 municipal key projects have officially started with an overall investment of more than 10 billion yuan.

In 2011, Shanghai has welcomed 230 million people, in which 8.17 million are from foreign countries, which not only brought Shanghai city a big sum of tourist income, but also promoted the relevant employment and market prosperity.

From January to July in 2012, 4.71 million people have visited to Shanghai, increasing by 2.5% year-on-year, of which 3.38 million are foreign travelers, rising by 3.2%.

"Though the current overall economy in China is still under adjustment, the third industry including tourism shows strong growth potential. Tourism industry, as a terminal consumption industry, shows great capacity to keep sustainable development", said Dao.

From Sept 15 to Oct 6 this year, Shanghai will hold a tourism festival.
